I Am Outraged!
Good morning…I am screwed now that my partner Tom has a new toy in Chat GPT images. He has way too many pictures of me actually ‘smiling’ or eating (when I am not looking) that he is cartooning…
Onward…
No matter how little I try to follow the news, it creeps in (when I open Twitter desktop) and for a moment (sometimes an hour) I get outraged.
The outrage is the entry free, the mental tariff I pay to get to the good stuff that I have actually worked to curate myself…the 50 people or so I follow to keep me up to date on technology, media and sports.
As AI proliferates, my gut feel is this ‘outage’ tax/tariff I pay to see the world outside of the financial markets/Stocktwits will drop, but many of the people I trust and follow think it will get worse. We shall see soon enough.
In the meantime, I long ago deleted all social apps on my phone other than Stocktwits. Stocktwits I love and need for trending tickers, watchlist alerts and mobile notifications which I have dialed in over the years to keep me up to date.
My friend John Kosner a media legend sent me an email yesterday that quoted another friend and new media legend Joe Wiesenthal (Bloomberg) saying that ‘Fintwit’ is dead. Naturally, I was outraged. For one, I was one of the first people to call the whole phenomenon of Twitter and Stocktwits ‘fintwit’ and we created the ‘cashtag’ ( $SPY ( ▼ 1.0% ) $BTC.X ( ▼ 1.13% ) ) at Stocktwits. Joe is just partially correct re fintwit…fintwit on Twitter is dead. But, fintwit on Stocktwits is thriving. It is fun, it is vibrant, it is smart, it is real time (no algos), it is quickly integrating AI to make it easier for more people to use and make sense of all the raw signal from the messages, ideas and chatter. It is also outrageous and entertaining and growing faster than ever.
As I tell our team…we are at the center of the real time degenerate economy – stocks, markets, options, crypto and soon betting.
Stocktwits is not for everyone, maybe even Joe. My job is to get him to give it another try because I know that Stocktwits understands the spirit of the original fintwit community even as it grows and evolves into being much more than that.
