Making 'Hay While the Sun Shines' — AI M&A and Funding in Mega-AI IPO Year
The adage that keeps surfacing in today’s AI environment: “Make hay while the sun shines.” That’s especially true in AI M&A and Funding. With three mega AI IPOs each targeting trillion-plus valuations teed up for later this year. When mega-IPO math is the tailwind, every AI asset prices off a forward-IPO comp — and the M&A calendar runs hot. Three items this week — one MP Take across all three (a new structural choice for Ep 62).
(1) SpaceX × Cursor — $60B, or $10B if he walks away. Elon Musk this week revealed a 12-month contract to acquire Cursor for $60 billion — or pay them $10 billion if they walk. Higher than what Cursor was worth twelve months ago. That’s not a deal; it’s a call option on the entire AI coding category. The sourcing read: NY Times — SpaceX Cursor deal. The under-the-hood read on why the number is so high: The Information — Behind Cursor’s deal, SpaceX/Anthropic compute costs loomed large. The frenemies frame that makes this deal rational even at $60B: AI-RTZ #806 — The Frenemies Nature of the AI.
(2) Cognition AI Coding Company— From $250 million valuation last summer to $25B+ valuation funding talks today. Same category, second data point: Bloomberg — AI coding firm Cognition in funding talks at $25 billion valuation. AI coding remains the best-PMF AI application (Ep 60 Take #1 anchor). Private-market pricing backcat: AI-RTZ #610 — OpenAI Levels Up AI Coding discusses how OpenAI lost Windsurf core team in $3 billion deal to Google due to Microsoft relationship. Then leftover Windsurf team made Cognition so successful since.
(3) Canada’s Cohere + Germany’s Aleph Alpha — $20B Sovereign AI merger. Europe’s sovereign-AI answer scales through consolidation: FT — Cohere / Aleph Alpha merger. Sovereign AI thesis backcat: AI-RTZ #732 — The Alluring Global Sovereign and AI-RTZ — Mistral, A Strong AI Wind from Europe.
(4) MP Take — one take, applies to all three events above. “We see these trends in almost every tech wave. Remember the Internet Wave ended with the most valuable internet company — AOL — buying the world’s largest ‘real-world’ media company — Time Warner — for $170 billion on 1/10/2000. Investors should always watch their fingers and toes while near and in these fast-moving trains. MP was there.” NY Times — 10-year retrospective on the AOL-Time Warner merger. Make hay — but keep your hands inside the ride.
Plus: Gadget AI — AI still hasn’t shown up in the smart-home corners of AI. Alexa, Siri, Google — not yet touched with AI. Still just good music players and alarm timers. Biggest MP complaint? The “Wake Word” problem. Three devices in one room all answer the same question at the same time. Haven’t solved the multi-device problem. MP not paying attention until that’s fixed. Context on what the home-AI players are actually shipping: The Verge — Apple Home, Ternus hardware, HomePad rumors. Standing AI-devices thesis: AI-RTZ #872 — The Glass Half Empty on AI Devices.
Bonus — today’s AI-RTZ companion #1066 covers Elon Musk’s confidential IPO filing for SpaceX / xAI at a $1.75 trillion+ valuation. The AI tail is wagging the rocket dog. Full story lives in the AI-RTZ; here in ARD it teases the cold open and anchors the fourth Short below.
Closing Qs —
-
What home automation has MP found useful? Alexa and Siri aren’t AI yet. They’re still good music players and alarm timers — nothing more.
-
Biggest MP complaint? Same answer as above: the Wake Word problem. No device in the Alexa / Siri / Google constellation has solved multi-device hand-off. Issue needs to be solved before AI modality the key way to interact with devices in the home. Stay tuned.
