The Golf Boom Is Accelerating…A Night With LA Golf and Bryson DeChambeau
Good morning from Los Angeles.
If you follow me you know I have a long history with golf and golf investing dating back to a seed investment I made in Golfnow back in 2006. Despite struggling with the game myself, my son Max’s love of the game and everything about it (fashion, culture, media, technology, history) has led us to make some personal investments in golf and an investment in Grass Clippings at Social Leverage.
I marvel at the exponential talent improvement of professionals and amateurs. Video (the iPhone, Youtube, Instagram) have been the biggest help, but new formats, money, fashion, media and of course COVID have been great for the growth of the game.
Just last week Good Good Golf raised $45 million for the massive brand they built on YouTube. If I had gotten that pitch a few years back I would have never believed. Kids like watching the best and the worst players. Good Good owns one of our Grass League teams as well.
There are golf fashion brands all over SOHO NYC and Melrose, LA. Max knows them all.
The guys at ProShop which produces Full Swing for Netflix raised $20 million from venture capitalists. Last night Max and I spent time with Chad Mumm their founder talking about their growth and vision and the industry along with Jimmy the co-founder of our Grass League. The media possibilities are endless. Chad and his company are also the producers of the soon to be released ‘Happy Gilmore 2’.
So about last night with Bryson and LA Golf….
Max and I and some friends (and 500 others) were at The Bel Air Country Club last night for the launch party of The LA Golf Driver designed by co-founder Bryson DeChambeau. Max and I met Bryson last year and he was just as fun to hang with yesterday (Matt Gulbranson and Jim Payne also in the pic)…

We talked a lot about YouTube again and his great channel.
I was fascinated by this recent video he did playing with really cheap golf clubs from China he bought on Temu. He shot 40 on the 9 holes and for him it was an actual struggle…
I asked what he thought I would shoot and he said 1,000. He was not bragging or making fun of me just explaining how god awful the clubs were. He is also just that good.
Here he is hitting the very first drive last night with his new LA Golf driver (I got fitted for one today) that he designed and engineered…

Max was focused on networking the whole night because when he graduates he wants to work in the industry. I saw his Instagram this morning and it made me laugh/smile…

That is Max with Josh Allen, Reggie Bush and country star Luke Bryan,
Reed Dickens, the founder of LA Golf, is not afraid to market his brand and products and takes it very seriously. If you have a great product and you have the means to tell the story…tell the story.
