Bears had the upper hand again this week, with economic and geopolitical volatility providing a clear catalyst to push the major indexes toward correction territory. 🐻

Let’s recap and prep you for the week ahead. 📝

What Happened?

🔻 On Monday, the trade war slammed stocks again, with tariffs set to go into effect on Tuesday. Singapore said it is investigating whether sanctioned Nvidia chips made it from Malaysia into China, while the Atlanta Fed’s GDP estimate turned deeply negative, sparking recession fears. Sunnova plunged, dragging solar lower.

🚨 On Tuesday, the sell-off broadened out beyond the tech sector as the major indexes erased all their post-election gains. CrowdStrike and Aerovironment were the latest popular stocks to sell off after earnings.

🔺 On Wednesday, bulls battled back after the ADP Payroll report missed estimates by a wide margin. Delayed car tariffs fueled automakers, Novo Nordisk went directly to consumers, and Moderna’s executives bought stock on the open market.

📉 On Thursday, Trump paused his tariffs on Canada and Mexico, but the bears had already done their damage. Chinese stocks surged on stimulus hopes, Intuitive Machines experienced a hard landing, and private equity went dumpster diving.

🐂 On Friday, stocks jumped on a lukewarm jobs report even as Powell suggested that the Fed is in no rush to adjust interest rates. The White House’s Crypto Summit disappointed investors after it ended in just 21 minutes. Lastly, the S&P indexes announced their latest quarterly rebalance.

🤩 This week’s Stocktwits Top 25 showed underperformance vs. the major indexes.
