This Week on Trends with Friends (October 13, 2024)
Welcome Friends,
Here’s an assortment of posts shared this week on Trends with Friends. Let’s dive in…
HATS OFF, HOWARD
Last week, Howard Lindzon secured his catch of the year. He shared,
My friend Lewis Johnson, who I came to see, got me up on four hours sleep to take me to the keys for a shot at catching a tarpon which has eluded me for years on my trips here. We had a short early AM weather window and as luck would have it I hooked and landed a 40 pound tarpon. It was a magical 40 minute fight on a 10 pound test line.

TIME FRAME ALIGNMENT
Phil Pearlman’s latest post talks Wisdom on Multiple Timeframes. He writes,
Time frame alignment is a powerful concept.
I love it as an approach to trading, and also as an approach for living.
If you can align life goals for the long term and the present then you’ve got actionable wisdom.
Some people sacrifice the present to plan for their future while others sacrifice their future to indulge their present.
Maybe we’ve saved a little but we really want to take a big trip with the family, so we book it and blow more than we allocated.
Or, we spend our lives saving like crazy for the future but we wind up never living for today.
This idea that we must prioritize one time frame over another is a false paradox.
Let me explain how… Read the full post here.
STARTERS TO STEP UP?
Larry Thompson looks at the S&P 500’s “Starters” and its “Bench” to evaluate the market’s strength. He writes,
The top 10 stocks in the S&P 500 ($SPY), which I call the “Starters,” make up roughly 34% of the index. These companies have earned their place by generating strong returns and growing their market cap. When they are on the field, the index has a much better chance of winning. Interestingly, none of the “Starters” made an ATH this week, even though the S&P 500 and S&P 500 Equal Weight did. Over the past three months, 6 out of the 10 Starters haven’t even positively contributed to the market’s performance—they’ve been on the bench and are just now stepping back onto the field.

TRENDS WITH NO FRIENDS
Trends With No Friends sifts through the noise and discovers stocks above $1B market cap with high relative strength and low social following.
The publication shares 52-Week Highs and Lows sorted by followers on Stocktwits.
Why is high relative strength and low social following important?
Stocks that are outperforming tend to continue to outperform. Stocks that have a low social following are, by definition, undiscovered by the crowd. Stocks that have both Relative Strength and Low Social Following can really outperform as more investors discover them.
This week, Trends with No Friends featured…
Samsara ($IOT), West Fraser Timber ($WFG), Amer Sports ($AS), Flowserve ($FLS), Kodiak Gas Services ($KGS) and more.
