This Week on Trends with Friends (September 2, 2024)

Welcome Friends,

Here’s an assortment of posts shared this week on Trends with Friends. Let’s dive in…

NVIDIA DAY

Howard Lindzon shared how he prepared for Nvidia’s latest earnings release. He writes,

The incredible boom in $NVDA from the degenerate economy (AI, Gaming, Crypto) is historical and fascinating because of the scale and acceleration so I have no idea when and how it ends.

One could point to a day (like today) dedicated to a company on Stocktwits signals some form of top. I don’t know. In the scheme of things, this seems less silly than the Gamestop, FTX, and Laser Eye market of 2020 and 2021.

Here are some data points about the ‘social momentum’ of $NVDA on Stocktwits that made today so exciting for so many:

$NVDA is the most-visited single-stock symbol page on Stocktwits in 2024.

$NVDA is among the “5 most active” symbols for every month in 2024.

$NVDA is the most active single-stock symbol by message volume in 2024.

$NVDA is the fifth-most followed single-stock on Stocktwits at 530,000, experiencing 20% YoY growth.

WE WANT THE JETSONS

This week, Michael Parekh previews the reality of advanced home robots, like those envisioned in The Jetsons. Parekh shares the current limitations of generative AI, manufacturing complexities and cost barriers.

It’s a must read.

NVIDIA’S TOP 3 RISKS

Ram Ahluwalia reviewed Nvidia’s top 3 risks, retail stock performances, the major indices and more in this week’s Lumida Ledger.

FUN WITH FITNESS

Dr. Phil Pearlman shared the importance of finding exercises you enjoy. He writes,

If you can find an exercise that you enjoy, you will feel great, you will stay healthy longer, and you will have fun doing it.

Maybe it was something you used to do when you were younger but then it got away from you as you got busy with adult things or maybe it is something completely new that you always wanted to try like golf or tennis or pickleball.

You don’t have to go crazy like you are training for the Olympics, just get out there and do it and enjoy it and then get out there and do it again.

Don’t worry about what experts say about proper form or how to optimize or regiments.

Just have fun with it.

Then, with time, maybe you learn a little more about what you are doing and you get a little better at it and it becomes your thing.

It can be anything.

A MOVEABLE FEAST

Ted Merz reflects on the origins of Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. Ted emphasizes the value of taking meticulous notes and how he’s adopted the practice in his own life. Here’s the money quote,

The documents in the trunk explain how Hemingway was able to remember so many amazing vivid anecdotes and conversations so many years later.

It’s also a wonderful example of the value of taking detailed notes and returning to them later.

It’s the only way to remember anything with any fidelity.

I’ve adopted the habit of writing one page each day. I include the places I go, people I meet, the things we say and what I read.

It’s long on specific details and short on opinions.

I did the same for many of the years I worked at Bloomberg LP. I would send out a daily note to my boss and colleagues with the specifics of what we accomplished each day.

Some people thought the daily regime was excessive.

I saw it as a way to document and communicate progress.

Also, you never know when the notes may come in handy.

ABNORMAL RETURNS’ TOP CLICKS

Here are this week’s top clicks via Tadas Viskanta’s Abnormal Returns…

TRENDS WITH NO FRIENDS

Trends With No Friends sifts through the noise and discovers stocks above $1B market cap with high relative strength and low social following.

The publication shares 52-Week Highs and Lows sorted by followers on Stocktwits.

Why is high relative strength and low social following important?

Stocks that are outperforming tend to continue to outperform. Stocks that have a low social following are, by definition, undiscovered by the crowd. Stocks that have both Relative Strength and Low Social Following can really outperform as more investors discover them.

This week, Trends with No Friends featured…

Aspen Technology ($AZPN), United Therapeutics ($UTHR), ResMed ($RMD), RB Global ($RBA), IES Holdings ($IESC) and more.

THIS WEEK’S EPISODE

And in case you missed it… Howard Lindzon, Phil Pearlman, Michael Parekh are joined by special guests — Raja Doddala and Chris Camillo to discuss Nvidia Day, AI, Robotics and more in the latest episode of Trends with Friends.

Tune in today.
