This Week on Trends with Friends (September 15, 2024)

Welcome Friends,

Here’s an assortment of posts shared this week on Trends with Friends. Let’s dive in…

HELLO FROM ASPEN

Howard Lindzon traveled to Aspen to attend Christian Van De Velde’s annual cycling event.

The guys climbed 4,200’ to summit Independence Pass. Howard writes,

It is my second year at Christian Van De Velde event. Christian is a great host and of course Aspen is incredible. Christian (on the left) was an incredible professional cyclist and in 2008 finished 4th in The Tour De France. From left to right are my pals Raja, Roy and Nave.

Independence Pass was very tough – a 4,200 foot climb to over 12,000 feet at the peak. Top to bottom I was on the bike for 3.5 hours. The 20 mile descent was in many ways harder than the climb because of high winds.

COMMON SENSE BREADTH THRUST

Larry Thompson likes to keep it simple. This week he reviewed the broad breadth thrust and writes,

We had a breadth thrust this week: 10 of the 11 sectors that comprise the S&P 500 finished higher on both a market cap and equal-weighted basis. You may not have heard of this thrust, as it’s not one that’s been published in books and backtested a thousand different ways, it’s what I like to refer to as a “common sense” breadth thrust.

RATE CUTS ARE COMING

As the Street anticipates the Fed’s rate decision, Charlie Bilello comments on the future expectations for the Fed Funds Rates. He writes,

The Rate Cuts Are Coming!

The only question: how fast will they go down.

See Charlie’s charts here.

THIS WEEK IN AI

Michael Parekh reviews OpenAI’s latest update, Apple Intelligence, AI price discovery and more in this week’s AI Summary.

It’s a must read.

NATIVE NEW YORKERS

Ted Merz shares his take on what it means to be a native New Yorker. Here’s the money quote,

When I travel and people ask me where I live I say “New York.”

But when a New Yorker asks, I would say I live in “the City.”

The person would understand I mean Manhattan.

To New Yorkers, “the City” means the island settled by the Dutch.

When you live in one of the other four boroughs you say so.

“Do you live in the City?”

“No, I live in Brooklyn.”

When a New Yorker asks where I’m from I say New Jersey…

My son is a different story.

TRENDS WITH NO FRIENDS

Trends With No Friends sifts through the noise and discovers stocks above $1B market cap with high relative strength and low social following.

The publication shares 52-Week Highs and Lows sorted by followers on Stocktwits.

Why is high relative strength and low social following important?

Stocks that are outperforming tend to continue to outperform. Stocks that have a low social following are, by definition, undiscovered by the crowd. Stocks that have both Relative Strength and Low Social Following can really outperform as more investors discover them.

This week, Trends with No Friends featured…

TPG ($TPC), Manhattan Associates ($MANH), CubeSmart ($CUBE), Aramark ($ARMK), Argan ($AGX) and more.

THIS WEEK’S EPISODE

And in case you missed it… JC Parets, Phil Pearlman, Michael Parekh and Larry Thompson talk semiconductors impact on the market, financials finding new highs, Apple’s health-focused AI strategy and more in the latest episode of Trends with Friends.

Tune in today.
