AI: AI Siri ready for takeoff this Fall. AI-RTZ #1112

It took a while, but Apple is finally poised to release an AI powered Siri. Leveraged by Google’s Gemini AI. Joining its big tech peers in offering a ‘Search, Ask and Do’ AI chatbot, reasoning and agentic.

Apple is in the AI game running aside big tech peers this AI Tech Wave. Apple laid out its strategy for developers in Tim Cook’s last WWDC Keynote as CEO.

Not to mention OpenAI and Anthropic in some of their functionality. Leveraging its partnership with Google and its Gemini AI to build a cluster of Apple’s own Foundation AI models large and small. Running in the cloud under a private, secure and trust-enhancing Apple Personal Intelligence Cloud, and on Apple Silicon at the edge in the full plethora of Apple platforms. From Macs to iPads to iPhones to Apple Wearables and beyond.

The WSJ highlights the key elements in “Apple Unveiled the New Siri AI. Here Are the Key Takeaways.”

“The iPhone maker turned to Google, using its technology to reboot Siri after struggling to release new AI tools.”

“Apple showed off a new AI version of its Siri chatbot on Monday, technology developed with Google that the iPhone maker hopes will help power a comeback in artificial intelligence.”

“Here are the biggest takeaways from the keynote:”

  • “The Siri AI digital assistant will draw on user data to help answer more complicated questions and complete tasks. Executives demoed Siri AI buying concert tickets, creating event plans, and identifying and interacting with objects in photos.”

All done with Apple touches in the keynote demos. The market digested the presentation after months of anticipation.

  • “In response to the highly anticipated updates, Apple shares closed down nearly 2% after the presentation concluded. Apple didn’t unveil any shocking, unexpected features, perhaps an indication the company is content to let users experience the step change in Siri and the impact it will have.”

  • “Siri will have a new appearance—and voice. A Siri bubble will appear at the top of screens, and users can adjust the assistant’s expressivity and pace. Siri capabilities will be synchronized across devices and interactions will be documented in a new app. A number of demos showed users interacting with Siri by typing and voice.”

As with the industry, Apple is gating the features on intensity of use, following the industry norms towards subscription pricing beyond free tiers.

  • “The availability of new features will be limited by cost, geography and device. Apple software boss Craig Federighi said that features such as image generation that use more powerful server models will have daily usage limits, though people can buy increased access with an iCloud+ subscription.”

Even with Apple’s industry surpassing focus on user privacy and safety, the new Apple AI Siri won’t be rolled out initially this Fall in Europe and China as regulators assess the new software. So new Siri logo and standalone app for them yet.

  • “Siri AI won’t be available initially in the European Union on iPhones and iPads, and in China, the new AI features won’t be available while Apple works on regulatory requirements. Some of the more advanced features will also only be available on iPhones, iPads and Macs with the most advanced chips.”

One of the areas Apple spent the most time was in online safety and controls for children across its platforms. With and without AI. Across Apple’s platforms.

  • “Executives also unveiled new child accounts and more robust parental controls, as well as updates to its tab manager and Spotlight, Liquid Glass design and more. Its new macOS 27 will be called “Golden Gate.” Apple will release the developments to developers today in a beta, with a public beta next month and a full launch to customers in the fall.”

For now Siri matches most of the features of its peers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others. With the Apple twist of working bottoms up off its hardware and software ecosystems. And a wide range of developer tools and applications to build their own AI services atop the Apple AI models.

I’ll have a lot more on Apple’s Developer conference software tools and services, including the AI enhancements, as the conference continues this week.

But for now, Apple has a differentiated approach to mainstream consumer AI services across its platforms.

And this AI Tech Wave will see more innovations around it all soon. Stay tuned.
