AI: Google Gemini AI rolls out 'Personal Intelligence' at scale. RTZ #1029

I’ve talked about the importance of memory tied into AI as a key element of mainstream AI utility since the beginning of AI Reset to Zero over a thousand daily posts ago.

And how in my view for a long time, the best positioned companies to potentially deliver that at scale have been Google and Apple.

Eventually, when the AI technologies get good enough. And when the big tech companies are able to build the AI data center Compute capacity to deliver the intelligence tokens at technical and economic scale. Well, at this point in the AI Tech Wave, Google is getting there.

And they’re leveraging an implemention pioneered by Apple with something called ‘Personal Intelligence’. It has echoes of Apple’s Personal Intelligence cloud servers deploying its version of ‘Apple Intelligence’. Something I’ve also long discussed.

The latest Google initiative is laid out well by Techcrunch in Google’s Personal Intelligence feature is expanding to all US users”:

Google announced on Tuesday that it’s expanding Personal Intelligence, its feature that allows its AI assistant to tailor its responses by connecting across your Google ecosystem, such as Gmail and Google Photos, to all users in the U.S. Previously only available to paid users, Personal Intelligence is available in AI Mode in Search, the Gemini app, and Gemini in Chrome.”

This means making it available for free where billions of Google users are already using various Google applications with their personal data and Gemini AI. And not expecting AI to try and help.

“Whether you’re looking for a specific brand of sneakers you previously purchased, or planning a family getaway based on your hotel confirmations and past travel memories, Personal Intelligence helps you find exactly what you need without having to give all the context,” Google explained in a blog post.”

“Personal Intelligence is off by default, as users have the option to choose if and when they want to connect their Google apps to these services.”

“If you’re at a tire shop and don’t remember your car’s tire size, any AI chatbot can help determine it. But with Personal Intelligence, Gemini can go further by suggesting all-weather tires after recognizing family road-trip photos in your Google Photos.”

The first imagined applications are of course ecommerce related. Going ‘where the money is’:

“Or, say you’re planning a vacation and searching for things to do and places to eat that everyone in your family will enjoy. With Personal Intelligence, AI Mode can draw on your hotel booking in Gmail and past travel memories in Google Photos to suggest a tailored itinerary with something for everyone. For example, you might see recommendations like an old-timey ice cream parlor based on the many ice cream selfies stored in Google Photos.”

“In another example, you could be looking for a new bag to match the new shoes you just bought. With Personal Intelligence in Chrome, you’ll see a range of options tailored to your recent purchases and preferred brands and styles. The recommendations will include subtle details, like purses with hardware that go with your new gold shoes.”

Key here is the embedded access to the user’s personal data. Something only Google and Apple have in big gobs of billions of users. Meta does too of course, but more on social communications and not much else. And a relativity of user trust vs other big tech peers.

Part of its is the care Google still takes with personal data as it scales AI technologies:

“Gemini doesn’t train directly on your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library. Instead, it trains on specific prompts in Gemini or AI Mode and the model’s responses, Google says.”

“Personal Intelligence is available today in the U.S. for AI Mode in Search, and is starting to roll out in the Gemini app and Gemini in Chrome for free-tier users in the U.S.”

“Google notes that these experiences are only available for personal Google accounts, and not for Workspace business, enterprise, or education users.”

This new, more affordable phase of Googe’s ‘Personal Intelligence’ is notable because Google is rolling out globally at scale across pricing tiers from free to paid. Making real what was merely theoretical thus far in AI Tech Wave.

How it fares in the market at scale as we go from chatbots to AI Agents and beyond, is yet to be seen. Stay tuned.
