AI: US frees OpenAI 5.6 vs Anthropic Claude Fable 5. AI-RTZ #1142
It’s been three weeks after Anthropic’s screeching halt called by the US Government, in what I’ve been calling ‘The Blip 2.0’, and the green light to Anthropic in releasing Fable 5 (though not Mythos 5 for now).
The US Government after also held back OpenAI’s comparable GPT 5.6 model to gated release on cybersecurity concerns. And is now unshackling it for wide global release this Thursday.
So the AI Tech Wave in the US is unleashed again, vs its Chinese open source and other competitors.
Axios lays it out in “Trump administration lifts restrictions on OpenAI’s GPT 5.6”:
“The Trump administration has given OpenAI the green light for a broad launch of its advanced GPT-5.6 model.”
“OpenAI announced that GPT-5.6 flagship model Sol, as well as lower tiers Terra and Luna, will launch publicly this Thursday.”
“Why it matters: The government and the world’s most advanced AI companies are negotiating how people get access to powerful technologies case-by-case, in real time.”
That was the ‘stop and go’ set of US policies I discussed at length on the AI Ramblings Daily (ARD) podcast #109 a few days ago.
“Driving the news: OpenAI’s green light for the wide release of GPT 5.6 comes after additional testing and meetings between the company and government officials.”
“Testing was done by the Center for AI Standards and Innovation within the Department of Commerce, with OpenAI sending technical experts who have remained in D.C. to address potential questions, the source said.”
“Context: The Trump administration pushed OpenAI to conduct a staggered release of GPT-5.6 last month, limiting initial access to government-approved entities.”
OpenAI of course expressed its views on the slowdown as diplomatically as possible.
“OpenAI said at the time that the staggered rollout was not its preferred way to release new models.”
“The company also said AI firms and the government are operating before more concrete standards for releasing such models — called for in President Trump’s latest AI executive order — have been finalized.”
It’s been an unprecedented set of unilateral slowdowns of its best AI companies. Unlike any seen across major tech waves. Espcially ahead of Anthropic and OpenAI’s race to their own trillion plus dollar mega-AI IPO this year and next.
“The big picture: Both OpenAI and Anthropic have recently had to limit the release of their most powerful new models.”
For now, both the leading US frontier lab AI companies don’t have their hands tied behind their back in this AI Tech Wave. Free now to rush out and charge a la carte prices for their best frontier AI models.
And the US is not self-hobbled in its professed US vs China AI race, for now. Stay tuned.
