This Week on Trends with Friends (August 11, 2024)

Welcome Friends,

Here’s an assortment of posts shared this week on Trends with Friends. Let’s dive in…

ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES

Howard Lindzon sees endless opportunities thanks to cameras and the cloud. Friday, Lindzon shared

There are thousands if not tens of thousands of incredible stories of incredible entrepreneurs, athletes, companies/products that will be told in the next 10 years because of Netflix and streaming.

The era of the smartphone and the cloud allows so much footage to be captured that can be stitched together.

It is not just Netflix and the streamers that benefit from smartphones, cameras and the cloud.

Yesterday I was talking about $AXON as a long time portfolio company…

The Taser got the company started but it is the private cloud business and the body camera business that have exploded the company and stock.

I am not sure of all the legal issues to be hashed out, but there are thousands of crime documentaries that will be stitched together over the years from the body camera footage held by Axon. Law and Order and CSI 2.0.

PALANTIR’S 3-YEAR HIGH

JC Parets posted his take as Palantir Technologies propelled +21% in the past week. He writes,

I love it when a group of people dislike a stock for reasons that have nothing to do with the stock itself.

In some cases it’s because they don’t like the CEO, or they don’t like the politics of the players involved, or they think the stock is some kind of fraud.

In the case of Palantir, you’re getting all 3 of these.

We love it when a stock hitting new 52-week highs makes people sad.

That built-in short-squeeze scenario is just adding fuel to the fire to send stocks much higher, much faster.

Here is PLTR hitting new multi-year highs this week:

Notice how Palantir engulfed the past 2 months of trading.

Just one week of price behavior made lower lows and closed at a higher high than any other week for months.

That kind of explosive action is exactly what we’re looking for, especially in the heart of a raging bull market.

THIS WEEK IN AI

Michael Parekh reviews Nvidia’s Blackwell chip delay, Google’s antitrust loss, OpenAI’s latest departures and more in this week’s AI Summary.

It’s a must read.

DIGITAL INTERMITTENT FASTING

Phil Pearlman practices digital intermittent fasting and shared his weekend phone fast protocol.

He writes,

I invite everyone to join in on the weekend digital fasts and so I set some best practices which you can alter, embellish, or ignore entirely. These work for me.

1. Late Thursday afternoons, turn off your ringer and notifications.

2. Most of the weekend, keep the phone in a drawer.

2. Zero social media or news even on the desktop and TV.

3. Friday through Sunday, block off thirty minutes in the morning and in the evening for texts and phone calls.

4. Sleep with the phone outside of your bedroom and in that drawer.

5. Monday morning, plug yourself back in.

YOUTUBE’S CREATOR ECONOMY

Last week, Ted Merz met Jacklyn Dallas and discussed Youtube’s Creator Economy.

Merz mentioned,

Meeting Jacklyn reminds me how technology has changed not only how we get news i.e. from a laptop not a printed newspaper, but also who creates it.

When I graduated college, you couldn’t be a journalist unless you were hired by a media company and media companies wouldn’t hire you without experience.

In the modern world you don’t need to be certified by an employer before you get the opportunity to interview the CEO of Google.

You just have to publish great content.

PURSUING EXCELLENCE

Tadas Viskanta curated a plethora of links on Pursuing Excellence. Here’s a sneak peek.

TRENDS WITH NO FRIENDS

Trends With No Friends sifts through the noise and discovers stocks above $1B market cap with high relative strength and low social following.

The publication shares 52-Week Highs and Lows sorted by followers on Stocktwits.

Why is high relative strength and low social following important?

Stocks that are outperforming tend to continue to outperform. Stocks that have a low social following are, by definition, undiscovered by the crowd. Stocks that have both Relative Strength and Low Social Following can really outperform as more investors discover them.

This week, Trends with No Friends featured…

Waystar ($WAY), Reynolds Consumer Products ($REYN), Fair Isaac Corp ($FICO), Cboe Global Markets ($CBOE), ICF International ($ICFI) and more.

THIS WEEK’S EPISODE

And in case you missed it… Howard Lindzon, Phil Pearlman, JC Parets and Michael Parekh reviewed the recent market volatility, the state of the bull market, the DOJ’s ruling against Google, the yen carry trade and more in a special LIVE episode of Trends with Friends.

Tune in today.
