TSMC: The Fed of the Tech Economy & other meaty AI Infrastructure items
Three Key Takes today:
(1) TSMC Q1 Sets the AI Industry Cadence. Fed-like. TSMC’s Q1 — profit up 58% YoY, revenue $35.9B, gross margin 66.2%. Advanced chips (7nm and below) now 74% of wafer revenue; HPC / AI data center = 61%. Full-year guide raised to 30%+ revenue growth. TSMC is the Fed of the tech economy — when they raise, the AI capex cycle stays green. Jensen’s $250B supply chain (AI-RTZ #968) runs through Fab 18. Demand is not the bottleneck. Supply is catching up fab node by node.
(2) xAI Opens a AWS like Compute Window for Cursor. The Information — xAI renting tens of thousands of GPUs to Cursor for training Composer 2.5. Mini-AWS move: the application/model company turning its ~200K-GPU fleet into a second revenue stream. Not desperation — the financing model for hundreds of billions in infra spend bending the same way AWS bent in 2006. Compute-as-a-service is the moat layer, not the model layer. Context at AI-RTZ #987 and #925.
(3) Google Ships Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6. Google DeepMind’s April 14 release — reasoning-first model for embodied AI. Flagship jump: instrument reading accuracy 23% → 93%. Boston Dynamics Spot integrating it into Orbit inspection software — a commercial industrial flywheel, not a demo. Right alongside Nvidia’s GR00T / Alpamayo / Thor executing similar foundational strategy— More Context at AI-RTZ #858 and #460.
Plus: Gadget AI — Meta raises Quest 3 / 3S prices effective April 19, citing memory chip prices driven by AI data center demand. Sony PS5, Samsung, Microsoft all raising prices too this week. Consumer hardware paying the AI infrastructure tax — the AI ‘mainframe-to-PC’ transition story, just with higher prices today. More Background at AI-RTZ #951.
Bonus — today’s AI-RTZ companion #1059 covers “The never-ending misalignments between Operating Platforms & Applications” — the frame that sits right next to today’s infrastructure-layer moves.
Closing Questions from You the Curious Folks —
Q1 Who has the steepest hill to mainstream billions of users?: xAI / Grok (hundreds of millions, not billions; distribution ceiling inside X).
Q2: Who is most likely to sneak up fastest?: Google Gemini (AI Mode in Chrome — 3.5B users, no install, no behavior change). Distribution beats benchmarks.
As usual, AI Curious Folks. thanks for joining. Stay tuned.

[Short — TSMC: The Fed of the Tech Economy](YouTube Shorts link) When TSMC raises, the AI capex cycle stays green. Q1 profit +58% YoY. Advanced chips 74% of wafer revenue. Full-year guide bumped to 30%+.
[Short — Grok’s Distribution Ceiling: Hundreds of Millions, Not Billions](YouTube Shorts link) xAI / Grok’s on-ramp to mainstream billions is the steepest of the frontier set — platform lives inside X, opinionated, politically charged for a big chunk of the mainstream.
(Plus 2 more Shorts — “Google Gemini: Sneaking Up on Mainstream Billions” and “Google Gemini’s Sneak-Up AI Push” — also live on the channel, along with 3 longer-form Segments on TSMC Fed Part I / Part II and Grok’s Steepest Hill.)
About AI Ramblings Daily (ARD), and AI-RTZ
Both are daily. Both are free. Both are about AI. But they’re different mediums carrying different messages.
AI-RTZ is the morning text — a deeper written take on one idea, published by at least 5 AM EST. Today: post #1059.
AI Ramblings Daily is the afternoon video + podcast — my ad hoc takes and perspective on the day’s AI issues & news flow, around 20 minutes, with short 1-2 minute clips for quick topic views. Today: episode #57.
