What’s Holding Back Nuclear Energy? Valar Atomics Says Innovation Is ‘Forbidden’

Sentiment surrounding nuclear energy is shifting.

Last month, I wrote about the $900M allocated to reignite America’s nuclear renaissance.

This week, Valar Atomics, a nuclear energy startup specializing in advanced small modular reactors (SMRs), joined a lawsuit against the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), challenging its policies.

The lawsuit, first filed on December 30, 2024, by Texas, Utah, and Last Energy in the Eastern District of Texas, targets the NRC’s regulation against small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced nuclear technologies.

Valar Atomics, along with Florida and Deep Fission, joined the case to push for an environment where nuclear innovation can accelerate.

The company writes,

What’s holding back nuclear energy in America isn’t talent, demand, or resources — it’s innovation. And even that is not because we don’t innovate; it’s because we can’t. We know how to do it. It’s simply forbidden.

This legal battle will likely take years — revolutions don’t happen overnight.
